An early experiment (they’re all experiments, aren’t they?) with colored pencil over watercolors. It was a bear to photograph because my camera was making it look way too grainy. I ended up using the blur filter in order to make it look right. Still a little work to do on it. I want to define… Continue reading Tree Medallion #1

JSON bug in WordPress Editor
So I was trying to upload an image to my (this) WordPress site and I kept getting an invalid JSON error. Turns out the pixel dimensions of the image were too large. It would have been helpful if the error message had said that.

Went a Little Crazy with the Watercolor on this Scarab Background
So I was a little bored with this colored pencil drawing of a scarab and I knew I was planning to try a watercolor background even though it’s not watercolor paper. And things happened… I’m actually pleasantly surprised by how well this turned out. I knew the paper would buckle, especially given that I really… Continue reading Went a Little Crazy with the Watercolor on this Scarab Background
“Goblin Dance” 1912 Woodblock Print by Bertha Lum
https://collections.artsmia.org/art/51102/goblin-dance-bertha-lumThere’s a lovely sense of movement in this print. How does Lum achieve this? The colors on this seem streaky. Is that deliberate, bad printing or a function of age? I think it’s actually the grain of the wood. #TraditionalArt #Woodblock
Derwent Lightfast Coloured Pencils not as Soft as their ColourSoft Line

As a color it’s nice… Continue reading Derwent Lightfast Coloured Pencils not as Soft as their ColourSoft Line
Minor update on Tree Medallion Colored Pencil Play
Playing with Colored Pencils
4″by 6″ Lately I’ve been getting back into colored pencils. Mostly because they require so much less planning than watercolors and it just feels freeing to use a pencil instead of a brush. I’ve also discovered Derwent Coloured Pencils. I’ve tried both their ColourSoft and their Colour Drawing pencils. They are much softer than the… Continue reading Playing with Colored Pencils
Watercolor Tree October 12
This one is almost done. I’m trying to decide if I should define some of the edges a bit more. I am starting to feel like I am getting the hang of this painting stuff a bit. .
Frank Lloyd Wright’s Imperial Hotel in Japan
I had always thought that Frank Lloyd Wright’s Imperial hotel in Japan had been demolished in the 50’s. Turns out that the section holding the hotel rooms was demolished. But the main lobby was saved and moved to a different location. One more reason I would like to visit Japan. https://www.imperialhotel.co.jp/e/our_world/column/the_wright_imperial_2.html
