Just a quick sketch playing with colors and trying for “looseness”. Overall I like it but I’m always nervous about intense colors. I’m never sure how they will be seen by others. But then I remind myself of all the hideous color schemes I’ve seen in art museums.
About three inches in diameter on Winsor and Newton Professional paper. Colors are Daniel Smith Quinicridone Violet, New Gamboge Yellow, Pyrrole Orange, and Pyrrole Red.
This is what I’m currently working on. It’s mostly pastel pencils on Golden watercolor ground. I have a bit of a love hate relationship with the medium. I may have to work larger in order to get the kind of detail I want.
Is it a positive wave or a troubling pattern? In this age of anxiety over joblessness and immigration, populist leaders in Hungary, Poland, Turkey, Sweden and the Philippines are tapping in. Is populism, as the 1960’s American historian Richard Hofstadter called it, “a paranoid style of politics”? Or is it what others describe as “the essence of democratic politics”?
