I darkened the trunks and added a ground plane. I think I might have been better off doing the ground plane in watercolor. I may add some dancing satyrs in.

I’m still workoing on getting the hang of working in colored pencil. I like the wispy look that I get by using optical mixing and letting the paper show through. Unfortunately that means that the photos I post have to be roughly the same size as the actual artwork or smaller. Blowing the size up makes them look too grainy. At some point I should try doing a large piece but I actually like making artwork that I can hold in one hand and prop up on my desk. This one is about 5 inches by 7 inches.

Trying for an older look to this mermaid’s face. I like the feeling of energy that the cross-hatching gives this piece. A lot of my compositions are way too static.

I’m going to call this one done. Overall I like it but of course there are a few issues.
Number one: I screwed up when I taped it and the lower left hand corner is nothing like square.
Number two: the watercolor leaked under the tape and while you can still tell where the border is, it’s nothing like as clear as I would like. This is probably due to using way too much water on paper that’s not made for it.
Number three: The tape pulled up some of the paper. Again probably due to using way too much water on a drawing paper.
Number four: The front legs should be more angular.
I go back and forth on the whole issue of paper. I prefer 300 lb watercolor paper but it’s expensive. On the other hand it’s so hassle free. No taping, no wrinkling, just cut it to size and go.

There’s a lovely sense of movement in this print. How does Lum achieve this?
- Dancer’s leaning.
- Rope made of light.
- Foreground dancers are larger.
The colors on this seem streaky. Is that deliberate, bad printing or a function of age? I think it’s actually the grain of the wood.
